A Salute to Bravery and Sacrifice
World War II was rife with moral complexities that, ultimately, had every major power in the world deciding how and when to enter the conflict between good and evil. A struggle in extremes of technology, idealism and preparedness, disaster turned into deliverance because of the dedication of the heroes of the armed forces.
Teaching the principles and events of WWII and other historical events in the classroom is a hit-and-miss proposition at best, as students counting the minutes until lunch break, or discussing their next exam with classmates, are completely distracted from our fascinating history. Take those same students to the battlefields of colonial Burma, drive home the sacrifices made as they stand on the soil where so many soldiers gave their lives, and it becomes a lesson they will never forget.
The Royal British Legion
As the national custodian of Remembrance, the Royal British Legion has teamed up with Newmarket Holidays to provide tours for student and youth groups to teach them the realities of conflict, and the importance of peace. Youth tours throughout Europe and the UK are designed to bring the past to life in a way no classroom lecture can. Remembrance Tours are led by ex-Service men and women who have been trained specifically to guide and communicate with these young people.
Remembrance Tours are specially focused on educating students, ages 13 through 17 years, with visits to the WWI and WWII battlefields of Europe, such as Ypres and Normandy. Britain has been involved in a number of conflicts since the end of WWII, prompting Remembrance Tours to other locations, such as Malaysia, the Falklands, and Korea, as well as bespoke tours to other places of historical significance.
Prepare to Remember
Each Remembrance Tour is dedicated to helping students truly understand the historical significance of the sites they visit. To that end, educators receive recommendations for pre-tour study to help both students and educators get the most out of their expert-guided tours. During the trip, lectures, videos and on-site briefings enhance the learning experience.
